Janet Young was born in Nottingham England in 1957, where she began her lifetime as an artist. In addition to intense self instruction, she studied fine art and illustration at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California, and at the San Francisco Art Institute. Interning at a commercial print shop in Berkeley, she became skilled at operating offset and letterpresses. She also developed her darkroom skills here as she printed and screened photographs and made production positives and negatives.
A move to the rural Lost Coast area of Northern California in 1980 catalyzed her freelance careers in oil portraiture and painting, graphic art and design and computer graphics. She still resides in this beautiful remote area, which is both inspiration for her art and home for Janet, her husband and their daughter.
Janet's paintings have become heirlooms in homes in England, Canada and across the continental United States. Via the magic of computers, she can work with clients from anywhere in the world, and the process of creating a beautiful, personalized work of art can be entirely achieved via e-mail.
Janet has a broad range of skills, currently creating portraits and paintings in both oils and charcoal as well as doing traditional illustration and illustrative cartography. She also works in commercial art including computer graphics, logo design and album cover illustration; builds architectural models; and is available for calligraphic work.
